How to set the Favicon on your wordpress website

And why it’s important to set your favicon

What is a favicon?

A favicon is a small icon that displays by your page title in the browser tab – It is also saved next to bookmarks, and can become a mobile home screen icon, or desktop icon if a bookmark is saved to these locations. There although this icon is small and often overlooked, it’s also the first memorable indicator a visitor gets of your website and your brand. Therefore neglecting it is a missed opportunity!

What should the favicon be?

Your site’s favicon is a square image, that needs to be identifiable at 16×16 pixels. However the image itself can be larger, though it makes sense to keep the filesize down as it’s the first graphic that needs loading on every page of your site. It’s often a simplified portion of the logo, using brand colours, and can have transparent portions to it.

Where do you set it in WordPress?

On your Dashboard, got to Appearance > Customise
From the customisation menu go to Site Identity
Underneath site Icon click on Change Image, where the standard media interface will let you upload and select an image.

WordPress states:

“Site Icon

Site Icons are what you see in browser tabs, bookmark bars, and within the WordPress mobile apps. Upload one here!

Site Icons should be square and at least 512 × 512 pixels.“

However it isn’t essential that the image is greater than 512×512 pixels, it’s more important to be recognisable at 16×16 – but if it looks good at higher resolutions too, this is a great help for situations larger versions can be displayed.
